Wedding Night
Tightly bound is the firewood,
Three Stars align in the sky.
What night is tonight?
My darling, my darling,
What a good man you are!
Tightly bound is the hay.
Three Stars appear in the corner,
What night is tonight?
My darling, my darling,
How fortunate is our union!
Tightly bound is the wild-thorn.
Three Stars above our door,
What night is tonight?
My darling, my darling,
How splendid is our wedding night!
Poetry Interpretation
The three stars refer to the belt of Orion. Traditional commentators believe it was a proper time to consummate marriage. The image of the tightly bound firewood/hay/wild-thorn could mean that everything is in order for the marriage as well as to symbolize the bond of marriage. The cheerful tone of this song cannot go undetected as husband and wife celebrate their union.
